Day 01: Berchtesgaden National Park

1. Königssee Germany

When the boat reaches a specific spot, the captain pauses, taking a moment to play the traditional flugelhorn, a special type of trumpet. The sound of the flugelhorn resonating in the surroundings creates a charming atmosphere, immersing you in the rich traditions of the region. How to Get There?

* Take a train from Munich Central Station to Salzburg and get down from Freilassing.

* And then take another train from there to Berchtesgaden Central Station (Hauptbahnhof)

* From there you have several bus options. 840 bus is the recommended one.

Things to Note

* Buy a ticket to Salet, not to St. Bartholomew. If you purchase a St. Bartholomew ticket, you will miss some amazing photo locations near Obersee.

* Arrive as early as possible, as there are many things to do. It may take more than one day to cover everything. We couldn’t explore all of them either, but don’t worry; we’ll also share information about those attractions.

* The initial boat ride starts at 8 am. The boats usually operate every half hour, and the schedule may vary based on the season.

Here, you’ll discover the best spot for Instagram-worthy photos. 4. Röthbach Waterfall

If you’re up for some extra energy, consider strolling around the lake and going a bit farther to reach the opposite end. There, you’ll encounter Germany’s tallest waterfall, the Röthbach Waterfall, with a remarkable 480-meter drop. Keep in mind that during summer, the waterfall might not look as impressive.

What makes this place special is its quiet and secluded atmosphere.  5. St. Bartholomew’s Church

Once you finish enjoying the beauty of Obersee, hop back into the boat to continue your visit to St. Bartholomew’s Church. Take in the scenic views as you cruise from Obersee to St. Bartholomew’s, exploring the charming surroundings and making the most of your journey. Experience the peaceful atmosphere of the church and marvel at its architecture. Don’t rush, savor the moments as you transition from the tranquility of Obersee to the cultural richness of St. Bartholomew’s Church.

6. St. Johann and Paul Chapel

The cute St. Johann and Paul Chapel is only a kilometer from Bartholomew Pier. Built in 1620, this small church shows the area’s interesting history and spiritual past.

The path to the chapel is quite easy, making it great for those who want a simpler walk. It’s a good option instead of the tougher hike to the Ice Chapel further down the path.

While you walk to the chapel, enjoy the calm surroundings. The chapel is next to the Eisbach River, creating a beautiful place for a quiet break.

7. The Ice Chapel (Eiskapelle)

At the base of the big Watzmann Mountain is the Ice Chapel, or Eiskapelle. We heard it’s more like an ice cave than a chapel, but it’s still a fantastic natural wonder. However this is another place we couldn’t visit the first time.

8. Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden

Start your second day by checking out Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, a village close to the Parish Church of St. Sebastian. Take in the beautiful views, and if you’re fortunate, you might even see the impressive Watzmann Mountain off in the distance. Enjoy the charming atmosphere of the village as you explore the area around the church and soak in the natural beauty that surrounds you. Don’t forget to capture some pictures to remember these picturesque moments. Take your time to appreciate the serene surroundings and make the most of your visit to this delightful destination.

For us, this is the most beautiful place in Germany.

9. Hike from Ramsau to Wimbachklamm

Set out on a scenic hike from Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, commencing at the Parish Church of St. Sebastian. Meander through the charming village, soaking in the surroundings, and follow the scenic trails leading to the breathtaking Wimbachklamm. This journey, free from reliance on public transport, allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Berchtesgaden. Experience the tranquility of the village and the captivating allure of Wimbachklamm’s wonders, making it a delightful exploration of the region on foot.

While we couldn’t personally visit Hintersee, it’s renowned for its serene lake surrounded by lush forests and the stunning backdrop of the Alps. Perfect for nature lovers, Hintersee offers picturesque walking trails and opportunities for peaceful reflection by the water’s edge.

12. Salt Mine Tour (Salzbergwerk)

Even though we didn’t get to do the Salt Mine Tour, it’s a cool trip beneath Berchtesgaden. Explore the salt mines, see caves, and discover the area’s mining past. This underground journey offers a special experience for anyone interested in the cool stuff beneath the surface.

13. Berggaststätte Jennerbann


Unfortunately, we couldn’t visit Berggaststätte Jennerbann due to our schedule. This mountain hut up high gives amazing views of the nearby peaks. Going there guarantees tasty local food and great views, making memorable moments.

14. Hitler’s Eagles Nest (Kehlsteinhaus)

Although our visit couldn’t include Hitler’s Eagles Nest, it stands as a historic site atop the Kehlstein Mountain. Built for Adolf Hitler, it now serves as a panoramic viewpoint. Accessible by a unique mountain road and elevator, the site provides a glimpse into the past and offers unparalleled views of the Bavarian countryside.
