As the sun went down, we went to a good spot to see the Acropolis lit up in the warm colors of twilight. The old fortress, with the famous Parthenon on top, looked impressive against the Athens skyline. Seeing it at night gave us a different view of the city’s most famous sight. A good spot to watch the sunset or see the night view of the Acropolis is Areopagus Hill.

Gyros Delight
No visit to Athens is complete without savoring the iconic Gyros. We wrapped up our day by indulging in this Greek street food delight. Succulent meat, fresh veggies, and tzatziki wrapped in pita – a perfect culinary experience to end our first day.
Day 02: Ancient Marvels: Unveiling Athens’ Timeless Treasures in Acropolis, Museums, and More!
We kicked off our second day bright and early with a plan to explore the majority of the Ancient Marvels of Greek history.
The Acropolis – A Timeless Marvel
Our second day kicked off with a visit to the Acropolis, the crown jewel of Athens. Ascending the sacred rock, we marveled at the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. The Erechtheion and the Propylaea added to the grandeur, providing a glimpse into ancient Greek architectural brilliance.

Areopagus Hill – A Panoramic Perspective
Adjacent to the Acropolis, Areopagus Hill offered panoramic views of the city below. Even though we visited on day 1 to witness the sunset and night beauty, we decided to visit again today. Steeped in history, this rocky outcrop served as a venue for both judicial matters and religious rites in ancient times. Today, it provides an excellent viewpoint for capturing Athens’ beauty.

The Acropolis Museum – A Modern Marvel
Descending from the hill, we explored the Acropolis Museum, a modern architectural masterpiece. Home to a vast collection of artifacts from the Acropolis, the museum offers a chronological journey through Greek history. The highlight is the glass floor, revealing the ancient city’s ruins beneath.

Temple Of Olympian Zeus – A Colossal Testament

Next on our itinerary was the Temple of Olympian Zeus, a colossal structure dedicated to the king of the gods. Although only a few columns remain standing, the magnitude of this temple is awe-inspiring. The history of its construction, initiated by Peisistratus in the 6th century BC and completed by Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, adds to its allure.
Plaka – An Enchanting Neighborhood
After a morning filled with ancient marvels, we wandered through Plaka, a charming neighborhood at the foot of the Acropolis. Cobblestone streets, neoclassical architecture, and an array of quaint shops create a picturesque setting. It’s a perfect place to immerse yourself in Athenian ambiance.

Ancient Agora and Roman Agora – Time Capsules of Antiquity

Our historical journey continued with visits to the Ancient Agora and Roman Agora. The former, once a bustling marketplace and civic center, housed iconic structures like the Stoa of Attalos. The latter, a marketplace built during the Roman period, still echoes with the whispers of ancient traders.

Temple Of Hephaestus – Architectural Elegance

We found the Temple of Hephaestus on top of Agoraios Kolonos hill. It’s an old Greek building from the 5th century BC, dedicated to the god Hephaestus. It looks amazing and is one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples.
Hadrian’s Library – Scholarly Retreat

Our historical tour concluded at Hadrian’s Library, an intellectual hub built by Emperor Hadrian. This grand complex housed lecture halls, reading rooms, and a vast collection of scrolls. The ruins speak of a bygone era where Athens was not only a center of art and philosophy but also of scholarly pursuits.
Eat: Loukoumades – A Sweet Finale
As the day waned, we treated ourselves to Loukoumades, delightful Greek doughnuts drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon. These fluffy, sweet bites provided the perfect conclusion to our day of exploration.
Day 03: Vouliagmeni’s Natural Wonders
Having explored plenty of Athens’ ancient marvels, we decided to unwind and relax by the seaside in Greece.
Vouliagmeni Lake – Nature’s Serenity

Our final day took us to Vouliagmeni Lake, a natural wonder formed by a collapsed cave. The lake’s thermal waters offer a relaxing swim against a backdrop of lush greenery. Legend has it that goddess Athena herself bathed in these rejuvenating waters.
We went into the lake and enjoyed a refreshing swim.

Things to Note:
– Purchase a ticket for lake entry; approximately 15 euros.
– Despite its inland location, the lake contains salty seawater, so expect a unique seawater experience.
– To get to Vouliagmeni from Athens, you can rely on public transport. We simply utilized the Google Maps option, and it was effective for us.
Astir Beach – Seaside Bliss

Next to Vouliagmeni Lake, Astir Beach invited us with its sandy shores and clear waters. It’s a special beach club where we relaxed, enjoyed the sun, and soaked in the beautiful Aegean Sea.

Athens is a city filled with history and charm. We were captivated by the mix of ancient splendor and modern attractions. Leaving this historical place, we took memories of a journey through time, culture, and the heart of Greece.
